    Greetings,

I was wondering if anyone else gets chills after they run (cold chills). This usually happens in winter and autumn when its cool.  I take a warm shower and am still cold after I run.

Any thoughts on how to cure this?

It also happens when I have a pretty strenuous workout of any type.

    Thoughts Ideas?

     Thanks in advance -

    -Take Miru

When you're running, your body temperature rises and it can make you feel like it's 10-15 degrees hotter outside than it actually is.  If you're going from a really heavy effort to either light walking or just stretching, your body temperature drops too quickly, hence the chills.  Try adding more cool down time at the end of your runs i.e. walk briskly for about 5 to 10 minutes at the end, it should help your body accustom itself to the temperature change, and helps your heart rate etc etc slow down.  If this doesn't help, try putting a hoodie or long sleeve tee on when you are stretching.  Hope this helps!

I get the same symptoms, sometimes to the point that I can shiver for 10-20 min after a run.  My husband thinks I'm nuts.  I was also recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and that may play a part in my metabolic rate and temperature regulation.  Honestly, I am also guilty of insufficient cool-down.  I guess if mperr025's advice doesn't relieve your chills, have your doc check your thyroid just for thrills.

I too suffer from chillas after long runs.  Also, my hands and feet get extremely cold (in just moderstely cool temps- we're in FL).  I have been looking for info but can't seem to find anything about it.

I am with billbradski, I would suggest that you drink more liquids and also that near the end of your run (or right afterwards) you drink a fairly large amount of fruit juice that is at room temp - not right out of the refrigerator. Warm tea with honey will help a lot. The point of this is re-hydration along with the insertion of glucose to get your body some food quick. Beau

My vote is with dehydration.   My body temp also drops after a run and I need a warm shower as soon as I get done stretching.  You also want to get some protein and carbs in you along with the liquids within 30 min. to help in your recovery.

I used to run with a guy who swore when he was dehydrated his right hand would feel cold.  He'd rehydrate and feel better.

While it could be dehydration, I have to go with mperr025. I get this frequently after I run 5 miles or more and am positive that I am not dehydrated. If you think are you properly hydrated it really could just be your body readjusting to the change in temperature.  Overhydration is a problem too, so be careful not to go overboard with hydrating. Try hydrating a little more to see if that helps; if not, don't think hydration status is the only answer for why this is happening. If your urine is a light yellow to clear color, you are properly hydrated.

Along with body temp and dehydration, it could also be low blood sugar. The biggest sign of low blood sugar for me is chills and shaking. If this is the case for you, drink some juice or easily digestable sugary-food.

This happens to me as well. I haven't really found anything that helps much once I'm chilled but you could try to stay warmer during your runs. You could also try to do your stretching inside.
